Frequently Asked Questions

Copy the post URL from any Mastodon instance (mastodon.social, fosstodon.org, etc.), paste it into the download field above, and click Download. We fetch the media directly from the instance's public API.

Yes. Our downloader works with any Mastodon-compatible instance — mastodon.social, fosstodon.org, mstdn.jp, hachyderm.io, and thousands of others. As long as the post is public, we can fetch it.

You can download videos (MP4), images (JPEG, PNG, WebP), GIFs (as MP4), and audio attachments. If a post has multiple attachments, each one is available individually.

No. You don't need an account on any instance. We use Mastodon's public API which doesn't require authentication for public posts.

No. Our tool only works with public posts. Private, followers-only, and direct message posts are not accessible through the public API.

We support standard Mastodon post URLs like https://mastodon.social/@username/123456789. Both the web URL and API URL formats are accepted.

Mastodon downloading is available on the Basic plan and above. Basic users get 250 downloads per month, Pro gets 500, and Expert gets 1,000.

Click the timestamp (such as '2h' or 'Mar 25') on the post — this opens its permanent permalink page. Copy the URL from your browser's address bar. The format is typically instancename.social/@username/POSTID. You can also use the three-dot menu on the post and select Copy Link to URL. If you found the post while browsing through your home server (federating their content), always navigate to the original post on its source instance to get the canonical URL, which is more reliable for downloading.

Mastodon's video quality depends on the instance configuration rather than a centralized standard. Most instances limit video uploads to around 40 MB per file, which results in moderate quality for longer videos. The maximum resolution is typically 1080p, though some instances set lower limits. Because Mastodon is open-source and community-run, quality varies more widely than on commercial platforms. GetVideoNow downloads videos at whatever quality the specific instance stores, with no upscaling.

GetVideoNow works with public posts on most major Mastodon instances that follow the standard ActivityPub protocol — including mastodon.social, fosstodon.org, infosec.exchange, and thousands of others. Some smaller or highly customized instances may have configurations that restrict how their media is served externally, which can cause occasional download failures. If a specific instance consistently fails, the instance may have blocked external media access — try viewing the post directly on that instance's website first to confirm the media is publicly accessible.

About Mastodon Downloads

Mastodon is a free, open-source, decentralized social network built on the ActivityPub protocol. Rather than one central platform, Mastodon is a federation of thousands of independently run servers (called instances) — each with its own community, rules, and moderation — all able to communicate with each other. Users share text posts (toots), images, GIFs, and videos. GetVideoNow supports downloading public video and media content from Mastodon instances, letting you save posts across the federated network by simply pasting the post URL.

Troubleshooting Mastodon Downloads

Instance URL format not recognized

Mastodon URLs vary by instance (e.g., mastodon.social/@user/123, fosstodon.org/@user/456). Make sure you're copying the full post permalink, including the instance domain and post ID.

Media from a federated post is unavailable

Some Mastodon instances restrict cross-instance media access or have federation limits. Try accessing the post directly on the original instance rather than through a federated view.

Content warning hides the media

Posts behind content warnings (CW) still have publicly accessible media if the account is public. The tool will download the media regardless of the CW tag.

Large video file fails to download

Different Mastodon instances have different upload size limits (typically 40–100 MB for video). Very large files may time out. Try again if the download stalls, as it may be a temporary server issue on the instance.

Only public Mastodon posts are accessible. Posts from locked accounts, content-warned media that requires interaction, or posts from instances that block cross-instance access may not be retrievable.
